As we heard today: Crossing the bay to the sea-bound castle is a mini adventure in itself.
Those who know me, know I don't do well in boats, but when we arrived in the village of Marazion the tide was in. Without hesitation, I strode onto the beach and along a concrete dock to a small waiting boat for our trip over to the island.
Once there, it was an immediate and dramatic climb to the castle built in 1135 by Benedictine monks. Interestingly, it has been lived in continuously since then, the current owners being the St. Aubyn family who occupy parts of the castle not open to the public.
It was a fascinating visit and we loved every minute of it. The hours slipped by and when we decided to leave, the tide was out, so we crossed back on foot over the causeway. As we approached the beachfront, the rains began and lasted for about 10 minutes but we didn't care... what a terrific experience!
The tide is lowering so the causeway outline is almost visible.
