St. Bees School

What a great time we had this morning. St. Bees School is full of history... just imagine that it has been a school since 1583. Looking through the gates at the quad, the 1583 part is on the left. There is a photo of me with Tony Reeve in what is now an eating area... this is the original wing and is where classes were held at the beginning. A huge building era began in the 1840's and the other buildings were added. When Mamie's father attended, the expansion had already happened. By the way, he would have taken his meals in this same dining room... the 1583 section of the school.
The second photo of the front of the school (black & white) is a postcard Mamie received from family... taken sometime before the Second World War.
The photo of the wooden panel shows carvings done by students... In the 1800's. Somewhere on a panel in that room is the signature of Robert Lamb. Mamie knew from her father that he had added his name while a student at St. Bees.
What a wonderful visit!
